16th IYAS National Writers' Workshop fellows named

The IYAS National Writers’ Workshop of the University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City, has selected 15 Fellows for 2016, out of 119 applicants nationwide.

The fellows for fiction (in English) are Hazel Meghan Hamile and Gari Real Jamero; (in Filipino) Abby Pariente and Isaac Ali Varona Tapar; and (in Cebuano) Roehl Joseph Dazo and Mae Tiffany Galendez.

Fellow for drama in Filipino is Adrian Crisostomo Ho.

The fellows for poetry (in English) are Miguel Antonio Lizada and Regina Angelica Theresa Bengzon; (in Filipino) Abner Dormiendo and Joey Tabula; (in Cebuano) Herminigildo Sanchez and Reyanne Joy Librado; (in Kinaray-a) Tracy Javines; and (in Hiligaynon) Anne Franceine Jean Corillo.

Alternate fellow for poetry (in English) is Nancy Ayeng.

The IYAS Workshop Director is Dr. Marjorie Evasco and the panelists for this year are Ms. Grace Monte de Ramos-Arcellana, Mr. Danilo M. Reyes, Dr. Dinah Roma-Sianturi and Prof. John Iremil Teodoro. IYAS Project Director Atty. Raymundo Pandan, Jr. will also be in the panel.

The IYAS National Writers’ Workshop is co-sponsored by the Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center of De La Salle University and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and will be held on April 24 – 30, 2016 at the Balay Kalinungan Complex of the University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City.

Nine (9) young writers have been chosen as writing fellows for the 1st Cagayan de Oro Writers Workshop scheduled on 1 to 3 April at the Reading Room of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan’s Department of English in Cagayan de Oro City. Said writers workshop is organized by the Nagkahiusang Magsusulat sa Cagayan de Oro (NAGMAC), in partnership with XU Department of English.

The fellows are Jessmark D Acero, Christian S Baldomero, Adeva Jane H Esparrago, Stephanie Alexis C Gonzaga, Arvin E Narvaza (Poetry), Hazel-Gin L Aspera (Non-Fiction), Gari R Jamero, Jeany Mae D Macalam, and Ervin Patrick G Silva (Fiction). This year’s workshop will be paneled by critic-dramaturg Rogelio F Garcia, Jr and other esteemed writers in the city. NAGMAC is also looking into tapping the expertise of other local writers such as poet-fictionist Raul G Moldez, poet Arlene J Yandug, and fictionist-essayist Ma Elena L Paulma. Poet Mark Anthony L Daposala serves as the workshop director.

As one of NAGMAC’s thrust, the workshop aims to revitalize Cagayan de Oro’s local writing culture and assert its identity in the map of regional literatures in the country.

Cagayan de Oro Writers Group Call for Applications

The Nagkahiusang Magsusulat sa Cagayan de Oro (NAGMAC), a community of literary writers and literature enthusiasts that aims to revitalize the local literary scene, is now open for applications. Applicant must be a native of Northern Mindanao and/or currently based in the region.

Minimum qualifications:
(1) Willingness and availability to go to official activities such as spoken word events, writing workshops, etc.
(2) Sincere passion for and interest in writing and regional literature
(3) Openness to sharing and learning from community fellows, mentors, and invited speakers
(4) High effort and quality of outputs in workshops and others

Membership categories:
(1) Category A – writers who have publication history and have received fellowships from regional and/or national writers workshops organized by reputed writing centers and institutes
(2) Category B – writers whose works have already been published in literary anthologies, journals, and books
(3) Category C – beginning writers
(4) Category D – general members
(Please see application form for required manuscripts to be submitted per category.)

Hand-deliver it (and the Php 200 registration fee) to our secretariat during or after the spoken word event on 12 February, 6 to 9 PM, at Chingkee Tea.

Membership perks include a chance to be mentored by established local writers, regular peer critiquing of literary outputs, first-hand information on the latest creative writing opportunities (regional, national, and international writers workshops, literary contests, among others), book exchange, discounts on spoken word events, and merchandise.

USLS Announces the 16th IYAS National Writers’ Workshop

The University of St. La Salle-Bacolod (USLS) is inviting young writers to submit their application for the 16th IYAS National Writers’ Workshop which will be held on April 24 – 30, 2016 at Balay Kalinungan, USLS-Bacolod.

Applicants should submit original work: either 6 poems, 2 short stories, or 2 one-act plays using a pseudonym, in two (2) computer-encoded hard copies of entry, font size 12 pts., double-spaced, and soft copies in a CD (MSWord). Short stories must be numbered, by paragraph, on the left margin.

These are to be accompanied by a sealed size 10 business envelope, inside of which should be the author’s real name and chosen pseudonym, a 2×2 ID photo, and short resume. Everything must be mailed on or before February 19, 2016.

Entries in English, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Tagalog or Filipino may be submitted. Fellowships are awarded by genre and by language.

Fifteen applicants will be chosen for the workshop fellowships, which will include partial transportation subsidy and free board and lodging.

This year’s panelists include Grace Monte de Ramos, RayBoy Pandan, D.M. Reyes, Dinah Roma, John Iremil Teodoro and Marjorie Evasco as Workshop Director.

For fiction: Belle Dominique T. Sunga (Davao City), Jeany Mae Macalam (Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon), Akiko Jane Cortel (Naawan, Misamis Oriental), Czarina Lanes (Davao City), and Jeopril Jane Pableo (Digos City).

For the essay and play, respectively: Ma. Jocedel A. Zulita (Davao City) and Norman Ralph Isla (General Santos City)

For poetry: Stella Acosta (Davao City), Ram C. Manlatican (Davao City), Genica Mijares (Davao City), Mike Ariel P. Plaza (Butuan City), Saquina Karla Guiam (General Santos City), and Krishna Zarate (Davao City).

The panelists this year are Dr. Macario D. Tiu, Jhoanna Lynn Cruz, Nino Soria de Veyra, John Bengan, and special guest writer Dr. Rosario Cruz-Lucero. Workshop Director is Julian dela Cerna, assisted by Dom Cimafranca.

The 2015 Davao Writers Workshop is organized by the Davao Writers Guild in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture & the Arts (NCCA) and the University of the Philippines Mindanao, and will be held at Lispher Inn, Matina, Davao City.

Opening ceremony on October 27 will be at 9:30 AM, and the following days of the workshop will start with a craft lecture from each panelist, the topics of which will be announced later. The sessions are open to those interested to listen and meet the writers.

The 3rd Satur P. Apoyon Short Story Fiction Contest

Fiction story writers who are residents of Mindanao are invited to compete in the 3rd Satur P. Apoyon Tigi sa Mubong Sugilanong Binisaya. A contestant is allowed only one (1) entry. The story should be original (written by the contestant, in Bisaya/Binisaya), unpublished (not yet printed), and must not have won any awards or used as thesis or workshop material. The printed story must be from ten to twenty pages only (printed using Times New Roman font size 12 points on Letter-size paper with paragraphs printed in double-space).

Send entry to: The Public Relations Officer, Administration Bldg., U.P. Mindanao, Mintal, Davao City 8022. The entry envelope should contain: three copies of the story; a separate paper signed by the contestant stating that he/she is the author and that the story has not been published, awarded, or used as thesis or workshop material; and the contestant’s mailing address, e-mail, and cellular phone number.

An electronic copy of the entry in Rich Text Format (RTF) should be sent by email to: davaowritersguild-at-yahoo-dot-com-dot-ph (davaowritersguild@yahoo.com.ph).

Non-compliant entries will be disqualified. The criteria are: Language (25%), Technique (25%), Relevance (25%), and Overall Impact (25%). Cash prizes are: P5,000.00; P3,000.00; and P2,000.00, with corresponding Certificates of Award. Winners will be notified. The decision of the judges is final. The deadline for submission is 09 November 2015. This contest is organized by the Davao Writers Guild.
